Composite Volcano A composite volcano is also known as a stratus volcano. These volcanoes form tall, conical shaped mountains. Most of the Earth's active volcanoes have formed a ring around the Pacific Ocean. There are 452 stratus volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire. The volcanoes are located in a volcanic arc on the continental side of subduction zones.

Cinder Cone Volcano Cinder cones are simple volcanoes which have a bowl-shaped crater at the summit and only grow to about a thousand feet, the size of a hill. They usually are created of eruptions from a single opening, unlike a stratus-volcano or shield volcano which can erupt from many different openings.

Shield Volcano A shield volcanoes for over hot spots in oceans. The magma that forms these volcanoes comes from the upper mantle. The Hawaiian Islands have formed over a hot spot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Ocean has drifted over this hot spot creating a string of volcanic islands and seamounts that stretch all the way to the North Pacific Ocean.
